The vast array of facial filler options available in Ireland today can be confusing and the guidance of a Consultant Plastic Surgeon is invaluable when deciding on the treatment best suited to your particular case. Dermal fillers may be temporary or permanent, may be natural or synthetic, may be made from collagen or hyaluronic acid or other materials, may be available in different particle sizes, may be stand-alone treatments or combined with anti-wrinkle injections or performed as a compliment to surgery. Plus there are many formats and brands available such as tear trough, as well as fillers made especially for lip enlargement.
How do dermal fillers work?
Fillers act as padding under the skin to fill out lines and hollows. Typically, fillers are used to reduce wrinkle depth rather than to eradicate them completely. They are injected using fine needles to strategic point on the face to plump and smooth the skin and the results are immediate.
Where are dermal fillers typically used?
- Lip Fillers
- Smoker’s lines (upper lip)
- Nose-to-lip lines
- Secondary smile lines on the cheek
- Corners fo the mouth where they droop down
- Frown lines and forehead
- Crow’s feet
- Depressed scars
- Hollow cheeks
- Lost volume in cheeks
Fillers are also sometimes used to improve the appearance and contour of the nose or the chin, for example. Beyond the face, similar products may also be used to treat the back of the hands to restore volume.

There are many different products on the market such as tear trough. Some information is provided below about the individual products but your surgeon at the Aesthetic Institute in Dublin will help find the right treatment for you.

JUVÉDERM HYDRATE
This product maintains the moisture in the skin and helps make it smooth, soft and elastic. When the hyaluronic acid content of the skin is restored, the skin regains its natural shine and luster. In comparison with other products, HYDRATE also contains mannitol, which has an antioxidant effect. The antioxidants prevent free radicals in the skin which may breakdown the hyaloronic acid. It is the addition of mannitol that results in HYDRATE having a prolonged effect.
JUVÉDERM ULTRA SMILE
This product was developed to be even smoother than other fillers with hyaloronic acid. Its smooth consistency makes it easy to inject, and results in an even result with a natural feeling and appearance.

This is a product that removes wrinkles and skin creases between the eyebrows, between the nose and mouth as well as marionette lines, or laughing wrinkles. We also use this product to treat scars, acne-scars, to shape the nose, for facial contouring and to enlarge lips.
Restylane SubQ
This product can help restore lost volume in the face in a natural way. Carefully added volume in cheeks and chin, SubQ will mark these area and the appearance will be more distict and youthful.
We at the Aesthetic Institute in Ireland do not recommend products that are non-absorbable, i e not taken up by the body, which leave a permanent result. The reason is that we try to avoid situation where injected material has to be removed, which would leave unwanted scars.
Does it hurt?
It can be uncomfortable to have fillers injected though it is not generally very painful. Some fillers contain an anaesthetic ingredient, and in some cases the Consultant Plastic Surgeon may use a topical anaesthetic to numb the area. There can be some swelling or redness for a day or two after treatment.
How long will it last?
This will depend on a number of factors, not least the type of filler used. Hyaluronic acid fillers can last up to a year or more but it varies from person to person and from one area of the face to another. It can also be affected by genetics, age, skin type, lifestyle, muscle activity and the injection technique used. It's important to follow the advice of your Consultant Plastic Surgeon in order to maximize the effects of your treatment.
To avoid bruising it is recommended that you avoid certain medications 2 weeks before your treatment; acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, NSAID (Nurofen, Ibuprufen, Ponstan, Difene, Naproxen etc). It is also good to avoid Omega 3 and 6, and Vitamin E in supplement or herbal remedies.
